DIY Medieval-Inspired Bookmarks: A Springtime Craft for Bibliophiles

There is something about the first bloom of spring that feels inherently transformative. As the world awakens, I often find myself retreating into the intricate, gilded world of medieval art. From the vibrant colors of illuminated manuscripts to the delicate floral motifs found in historical tapestries, the artistry of the Middle Ages is a constant source of inspiration during this season of renewal.

To celebrate this connection, I’ve spent the last few afternoons creating a set of DIY medieval-inspired bookmarks. They are the perfect way to bring a touch of old-world charm to your current read—and they make wonderful, thoughtful gifts for friends who share a love for history and literature.

Why Medieval Art and Spring Go Hand-in-Hand

Medieval illustrators were masters of the natural world, often bordering their pages with "marginalia" filled with vines, flowers, and birds. Recreating these designs in the spring feels like a nod to that tradition. Whether you are a fan of Gothic aesthetics or the bright palettes of the Renaissance, these bookmarks are a simple way to practice your craft.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Heavyweight Cardstock: Cream or "parchment" tones work best for an authentic look.

  • Gold Metallic Ink or Paint: To mimic the "illuminated" gold leaf effect.

  • Fine-Liner Pens: Black and deep red for intricate linework.

  • Watercolors or Gouache: Rich blues, vermillion, and forest greens.

Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Bookmarks

1. Prepare Your Canvas

Cut your cardstock into strips (roughly 2" x 7"). If you want a more rustic, "vellum" feel, you can lightly stain the paper with a tea wash and let it dry completely before starting your design.

2. Sketch Your Border

Medieval manuscripts are famous for their elaborate borders. Using a pencil, lightly sketch trailing vines or geometric patterns along the edges. Springtime tip: Incorporate symbols of the season, like small daisies, strawberries, or winding ivy.

3. Add the "Illumination"

This is the secret to the medieval look! Use your gold paint to fill in specific accents—perhaps the centers of flowers or a large initial letter at the top of the bookmark. The gold will catch the light beautifully every time you open your book.

4. Layer Your Colors

Fill in your sketches with deep, saturated colors. Medieval art doesn't rely heavily on shading; instead, focus on bold blocks of color and crisp outlines.

5. Finishing Touches

Once the ink is dry, punch a small hole at the top. Thread through a velvet ribbon or a handmade tassel. This adds a tactile, luxurious feel that makes the bookmark feel like a true artifact.

Sharing the Love of Books

One of my favorite parts of this project was envisioning these tucked into the pages of a friend's favorite novel. In an age of digital everything, a handmade, historically-inspired token is a beautiful way to stay connected.

The Grandmaster Date Night: A Dark Academia Chess Evening

There is something inherently romantic about the slow, deliberate pace of a chess match—especially when paired with a moody atmosphere. Whether you are a seasoned strategist or just like the aesthetic of a well-placed knight, a chess-themed date night is the perfect way to unplug and connect.

1. Set the Scene

To capture that viral Dark Academia look, focus on lighting and texture.

  • Mood Lighting: Skip the overhead lights. Use tapered candles or a dim brass lamp to create deep shadows.

  • The Board: If you don't have a vintage wooden set, look for one with "heavier" pieces that feel substantial in your hand.

  • Soundtrack: Put on some cello-heavy classical music or a "Gothic Romance" instrumental playlist to channel the right vibe.

2. The Menu

Since we're going for a sophisticated yet cozy feel, choose foods that are easy to eat between moves.

  • The Charcuterie Board: A selection of sharp white cheddars, dark grapes, and crusty bread.

  • The Drink: A deep red wine or a smoky Earl Grey tea served in mismatched vintage teacups.

  • Dessert Fondue: A small chocolate fondue with strawberries is a great way to celebrate the end of the match.

3. Curated Pairings: Chess & Cinema

After the game, lean into the themed dinner experience by pairing your evening with a film that matches the mood.

  • For the Mystery Lover: The Queen’s Gambit for pure chess inspiration.

  • For the Fantasy Fan: Labyrinth features iconic strategy elements.

  • For the Literary Soul: Jane Eyre keeps the Gothic atmosphere alive.

Whether you are looking to disconnect from the digital world or simply want to bring a touch of the Gothic romance into your home, a chess-themed date night offers the perfect blend of strategy and atmosphere. By focusing on these details, you can transform a simple evening into a memorable, immersive experience. Once you’ve set the board and poured the drinks, you'll see why this timeless game continues to be the ultimate centerpiece for a sophisticated night in. Now, all that’s left is to make your opening move.

Celebrate the King's Coronation with a Tea Party

From England to the US, people everywhere will be tuning in for the Coronation of King Charles III on May 6th, 2023. Join in on the fun and celebrate in style with a tea party that's fit for royalty.

What to Eat

Tea party food is my absolute favorite! Start with some tea sandwiches. Coronation chicken seems fitting for the occasion, and cucumber with mint is always a classic. Be sure to trim the crusts and cut them into strips or triangles. We also added mini quiche to our savory course, but sausage rolls would be a delicious addition as well.

Fruit is a great way to add color to the table. My favorites are raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, or grapes.

It wouldn't be a tea party without scones! Set out an assortment of jams, lemon curd, and clotted cream to spread on top.

Choose a sweet treat like cupcakes, tarts, cake, or petit fours to finish off your tea party with.

Set the Scene

Some Union Jack bunting or printable version can go a long way when it comes to decorations. You could also get crowns for each of your guests or have everyone wear a fun hat or fascinator.

Now the only thing left to do for your Coronation tea party is send out the invitations!

What to Eat

Baguette sandwiches are a Parisian staple. Head to your local bakery and pick up a few baguettes, spread some dijon inside, and layer on the ham and Swiss cheese. Serve grapes or berries for a picturesque side.

Macarons are an essential for dessert. We have a bit of a sweet tooth around here, so we also torched up some crème brûlée.

Grab your favorite drink and a few fancy glasses for a très chic lunch spread.

Set the Scene

A few decorations can go a long way for a casual watch party. Pink roses and a candle make the set up feel special. You could add pink balloons, a french flag banner, or mini Eiffel Tower figurines. To make this extra Parisian, it would be fun to hand out berets to your guests.

Ready to binge the next season? These watch party ideas are easy to pull together and are a fun way to get your friends together. All that's left to do now is send out the invites!

WISH ON A YULE PINECONE

Wishing on a Yule pinecone is a magical winter solstice tradition that has been celebrated for centuries. This family-friendly activity lets participants write down their goals, intentions, and wishes, then tuck them into pinecones to burn in the fire. It’s a meaningful, hands-on alternative to typical New Year’s resolutions and adds a fun, memorable moment to any winter solstice gathering.

My family started incorporating this yule pinecone activity into our existing winter solstice traditions. We'll have family over for dinner, bake and decorate a yule log for dessert, and finish off the night with burning our yule wishing pinecones.

What is a Yule Wishing Pinecone?

A Yule wishing pinecone is more than just a craft—it’s a symbolic way to set intentions for the coming year. Participants write their goals or wishes on scraps of paper, roll them up, and insert them into the crevices of a pinecone. When the pinecones are burned in a fire, it’s believed that the wishes are released, bringing energy and intention into the new season.

This centuries-old tradition is perfect for family gatherings, holiday parties, or quiet reflection at home.

How to Make Your Own Wishing Pinecones

You’ll need a few simple supplies to get started:
  • Pinecones
  • Small scraps of paper or recycled note paper
  • Markers, pens, or colored pencils
  • Optional: glitter, ribbons, or other craft decorations
  • Fireproof container or fire pit for burning
Directions:
  1. Write a goal, intention, or wish on a scrap of paper.
  2. Roll the paper into a small tube or fold it to fit into the pinecone’s gaps.
  3. Insert the paper into the pinecone crevices.
  4. Optionally, decorate the pinecone with glitter, ribbons, or paint for a festive touch.
  5. When ready, place the pinecones in a fireproof container or fire pit and carefully burn them.

Involving Kids in the Yule Pinecone Tradition

Getting kids involved can make the activity extra special. Go on a nature hike to collect pinecones, then set up a craft station with kid-safe markers, glitter, and ribbons so everyone can decorate their wishing pinecones. Younger children can participate by choosing their colors or helping fold the papers.

Once finished, gather together to share your wishes and intentions, then burn the pinecones as a family activity. Kids will love the creativity and the excitement of seeing their wishes “magically” released.

If it gets too cold where you live to sit around the fire outside, then consider an indoor fireplace as another option. You could also encourage your party guests to take their pinecones home with them as a reminder of their goals.

Small holidays like winter solstice are some of my family's favorites. There are zero expectations for these obscure holidays, so you are free to set your own traditions. Are there any holidays outside the norm that you celebrate?

THE CHICKEN LOQUAT RECIPE

Every family has a collection of the recipes. The dishes that have stood the test of time and have been handed down for generations. The comfort foods they have grown up eating. The tastes and smells that take them back to memories of holidays, gatherings, and spending time with the people who matter most. The recipe pages that stick together and are covered in drips. The meals that take them back home even when they are far away.

I wanted to start sharing some of my family's recipes that have made it into the classification we like to call the recipes. First up, chicken loquat. This dish savory chicken meatballs covered with sweet loquats and tangy sauce, all on top of Calrose rice.

This recipe has been in my family ever since my great-grandparents were in Okinawa, Japan, after WWII. It's has been one of our favorites for generations, so I hope you like it as much as we do.
