WATERCOLOR TUTORIAL | GEODE

watercolor geode
To make your own watercolor geode, all you need to be able to paint is a few abstract blobs of color! This watercolor geode is one of the most relaxing things I ever painted. Simple finishing touches take those abstract blobs and turn them into an intricate geode. Get out your paints and keep reading!

painting a geode

Step 1. I chose to paint a purple geode, but almost any color would look great. I also like blue and green geodes. Start by painting a lumpy oval shape with the lightest shade of whatever color you are using.

Step 2. Using the darkest color, paint a ring around the edge of the oval. Make sure the oval is wet so the paint spreads and mixes. The messier, the better.

Step 3. Paint a smaller oval inside the bigger one using a different color. Paint a ring around the oval you just painted using the same color. Using less water makes the ring a more saturated color.

Step 4. Keep painting different colored ovals and rings until you like how the geode looks.

Step 5. While your watercolor painting is still wet, sprinkle some salt on the geode. This will soak up some of the color around the salt crystals which makes for an interesting texture.

Step 6. Once the watercolor has dried, brush away the salt and paint a ring of gold craft paint around the geode. Doesn't the salt and gold edge make all the difference?!

Wasn't that easy? I'm going to paint a whole bunch of them and make a geode gallery wall. While you're in the artsy mood, make sure to check out my Colored Pencil Soft Serve Art Tutorial!
